Bulk fly ash arrives in pneumatic tanker trucks and gets blown into a silo, a spreader or straight onto the job. Buying it goes smoothly when the site is ready for the trucks, the ash stays dry until it is used, and you have asked the supplier the right questions before the first load. This page is the checklist.
Tell us the job and how the ash will be used.
Fly ash moves in sealed pneumatic tanker trailers, often called pigs. At the site, the driver hooks a hose to the trailer and uses air to blow the ash out into whatever is receiving it. On soil jobs that is usually a spreader truck or the ground directly. On plants and batch sites it is a silo.
Unloading takes time, the truck needs room to set up, and the hose only reaches so far. Plan where the truck parks before the first load shows up, not while it is idling at the gate.
Self-cementing fly ash starts to set as soon as it gets wet. That is what makes it work in the soil, and it is also why a pile left in the rain turns into a crust or a block that nobody can spread.
On soil jobs the safest place for ash is mixed into the ground. Schedule loads to match what the crew can spread and mix that day.
Moisture getting into a silo through a bad seal or a wet fill line can bridge or harden the ash inside.
An uncovered pile of fly ash will set on top and blow away underneath. If it has to wait, it waits in a silo or a sealed trailer.
Dust and skin. High-calcium ash is alkaline and fine. Crews unloading and spreading it should wear eye protection, gloves and a dust mask, and wash it off skin. The safety data sheet covers the details.

Which ash it is, what the test data shows and how often it is tested, whether every load comes from the same source, what the backup is if the plant goes down, and how much notice loads need.
A firm access road that holds a loaded tanker, a turnaround, a level unloading spot within hose reach, and someone on site to receive the load.
It is fine and alkaline, so it can irritate eyes, skin and lungs. Use eye protection, gloves and a dust mask, and follow the safety data sheet.
